Whether you’re planning a fashion collection, rebranding your aesthetic, or curating a vibe for a trip, a mood board helps bring your vision to life. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a cohesive, professional-looking mood board in Canva, without requiring any paid software. By the end, you'll know exactly how to curate visuals that tell a consistent story.

The 7 steps!

Step 1: Define Your Theme

Decide what mood or project your board will represent. It could be a fashion collection, color palette, or trip vibe! Tip: Write down 3-5 keywords that describe your vision before starting.

For my example, I am basing my moodboard on a Pantone color, and my keywords are Luxurious, Ethereal, and Royal.

Step 2: Collect Inspiration

Gather visuals from Pinterest, Unsplash, or your own photos that match your theme. Try to find photos with consistent lighting and tones!

Here is a Pinterest Board I created for this mood board.

Step 3: Open Canva and Choose a Template

Use a free mood board template or create your own blank canvas. I like to use 24in x 18in for my personal projects, but for professional projects, I use 11in x 8.5in.

Step 4: Set a Color Palette

Stick to a couple of main colors, about 3-5 that appear across your photos. Canva’s Color Palette Generator makes this super easy!

Step 5: Arrange Your Photos Thoughtfully

Play with composition. Group similar tones or subjects together to create flow. There are two popular layout options: one involves leaving space around each element, and the other resembles a photo collage with a lot of layering.

Step 6: Add Text or Keywords

Label your board with a theme tile and a few supporting words. Use minimal and elegant fonts; you want to enhance your moodboard and not distract from it.

7: Review and Refine

Zoom out to see if your board feels balanced and consistent. Ask yourself, Does this clearly express my theme at first glance?

Thank you so much for following along and creating a mood board with me today! I'd love to see what you created, so please tag me!
